cristina re surprise

On Tuesday I headed down the mountain and into the big smoke to get some things for upcoming markets (and to meet up with my favourite PNG pikininnies and jungle mama in town). I found my way to Abbottsford, parked in a side street near the shop-fitters I needed to visit, walked around a corner and literally ran into the most delightful little shop.

I saw the A-frame out the front - 'lifestyle store' it said, at first I thought it was all bridal related, hmmm maybe shouldn't go in as I might look like crazy lady obsessed with getting married when I don't have a ring on my finger. Very Muriel's Wedding of me. Then I peeked inside and saw a bit more of a cafe setting. I could do with a takeaway coffee I thought.

In I went and look what I found! It took me about fifteen seconds to realise it was Cristina Re related, then another thirty seconds to realise that this was actually Cristina Re's flagship store, 'Where a Girl Goes'. Indeed! As you can see it was just all too pretty - the seating, the lighting, the displays, all the neatly organised papers, punches, ribbons and stamps. On the walls were beautiful ink sketches of leggy female figures, adorned with various Cristina Re papers in the shapes of draping dresses and billowing blouses.

And the cafe scene was second to none. GREAT coffee, super cute little cupcakes and macaroons and (my favourite part) the coffee machine was not silver, it was not black, not even a funky red you sometimes see in hip Fitzroy cafes - oh no, it was white! Loved it.

I didn't take any photos in there (I was the only one in the store and thought I might look seriously weird taking photos with my phone) but once I got outside I took a snap of the cutest takeaway coffee cup I've ever had the pleasure of purchasing.

Now I've found out that there are high tea parties held there, how amazing would it be for a bridal shower, hens party, baby shower? My next birthday party (wink, wink, hey, hey?!)

How did I not know that this little piece of Melbourne existed? Once upon a time when I lived very nearby this little shop I would've been allll over this new find. I felt so out of the loop! And off I trundled back to the farm in my very dusty big soccer mum car after a dose of Melbourne.

I will be back pretty shop, oh I will be back.

{ Back to Reality...Again }

I have returned from a week at home in Gippsland spent with family and friends. I thought an entire week would be blissfully relaxed but the reality was we still ran around to dinners and family visits, booked up every day and night. Both mine and Mr M's parents are this year selling the family homes so we have arrived back to Ythanbrae with a car load of childhood toys and keepsakes to somehow stash in this tiny cottage. And  a mountain of washing...and work! So much photography work!

Although it is {already!} late January, I am feeling a sense of new year only now that I have stopped to take a breath after finishing up at my day job, running around the countryside with Christmas and New Year weddings. Today is the first day of my new job. And I don't have a boss - that's me! Scary? Yes. Empowering - definitely! Now to knuckle down, buckle down do it, do it, do it!

Oh - and the photo? Not really relevant but a pretty Monday morning pick-me-up. It is from Holly's Interior Styling flickr group that I am a part of, and must be more active in {New Year's resolution!} The very talented photographer/stylist is Mochatini.

{ Australian Country }

Holly over at decor8 has been pondering country style and how it differs across the globe - or even across countries. It got me thinking about Australian country style and what it is, what it means to me and how it has evolved. What makes it different to English country style? American country style? French country style?

To me, Australian country style conjures images of wide wrap-around verandahs, corrugated iron, aga stoves, wattle in vegemite jars, Margaret Fulton cook books, drizabones, RM Williams boots at the door.
{A lot of Australians would find this so clichéd – but at our house this is very much a reality.}
As such a young nation us Aussies have been moulded by so many influences. It pains me that for so long being an Australian was classed as a second class citizen {remember the newsreaders voices of the 1960's sounding so very British? Heaven forbid you had an Australian twang!} It was frowned upon to embrace, or even try to forge, our own identity. I think artists such as Ken Done and even as far back as Tom Roberts and Fredrick McCubbins did a lot to create a sense of what being Australian actually meant and formed a sense of ownership towards our culture.
{If anyone has ever visited the National Gallery of Victoria and admired 'Shearing the Rams' or the enormity of 'The Pioneer' I'm sure you will agree, I am always quite moved by them.}
It's also fair to say that Australian country style varies so widely in different parts of our wide brown land. Growing up in the lush Gippsland hills I didn't have much of an affiliation with the dusty homesteads of outback Queensland. I did however ride horses, play hide and seek in our old shearing shed, run around in spud paddocks and splash in dams - an Australian childhood I think has very much influenced my design aesthetic. I love vintage Australiana: Rosella soup cans, Cuddlepie and Snugglepot illustrations, Audrey the skipping girl on Victoria Street in Richmond. I am especially drawn to Australian farming imagery - old wool bale stencils are a favourite {after all we did ride the sheeps back to modern Australia}. We proudly have on display in our lounge room a photo of my grandfather with his two clydesdale's plowing a potato paddock in the 1940's as well as the 5 foot stick Mr M's grandfather used every day to get his cows into the dairy. They were the first things we grabbed on Black Saturday in February when we had to leave.
Australian style it seems is very much about where we have come from and where we are going.
Anna Spiro of Absolutely Beautiful Things displays great examples of Australian style in both her Brisbane and Stradbroke Island homes. Her Stradbroke house is full of red, white and blue, very nautical and to me I would say very Cape Cod/American country style. But to her it is Australian country style, which is what makes this country style debate {discussion rather} such an interesting one. Queenslanders definately have a different country style to us more European influenced southerners - all very much to do with the climate too I'm sure. The number one must-have for an Australian country styled home would have to be outdoor living areas. In our great climate outdoor eating, barbeques and the beach is such a big part of our lives. Coastal fibro shacks on the mid-New South Wales coast, tropical escapes in Cairns, crumbling cottages in Victoria's north east or rambling homesteads on the Oodnadaata Track are all Australian country style I'm sure.

Our weatherboard cottage in Murrindindi is about an hour from Mansfield, where the Australian classic The Man from Snowy River was filmed. Mr M has spent a lot of time in the high country {we go to Dargo camping every Easter, driving along the Upper High Plains Road you can almost hear the Man from Snowy River theme song playing} so we tend to adorn our home with images like Craig's Hut - above our mantlepiece - and Wallace's hut - above our bed.
And the difference between Australian country style and the rest of the world? Australian country style has to be a bit dirty, a bit rough and essentially very casual, and definately include the outdoors. English country style I think is too formal for us, French country style too polished, Scandinavian too stark - but I think what makes our country style the best {of course we win!} is that it is a blended marriage of all the influences that have come to our shores with our convict history and immigration throughout the 20th century.
No matter what your interpretation is of Australian country style, I think it's important that it is just that - your interpretation. Don't let rules get in the way, as our national anthem reminds us:

'we are young and free'.

{ Oh Country Style... }

I was pleasantly surprised yesterday to find the latest copy of Country Style in my mailbox. Hurray! I am always quite besotted with my precious favourite magazine, my eyes glaze over, I can't hold a normal conversation and I lovingly flick through the pages - sometimes while I sit in my car still down at the mailbox, I can't wait to drive the 3km's home to open it, don't be silly!

September's edition has done it again - beautiful homes, beautiful photography, and best of all stories of real Australians living the rural dream. The start of Spring makes me oh so happy with the thought of fresh mornings, sunny afternoons, David Austin roses and waking up from a long winter hibernation.

My jaw dropped when I saw this home {below} Long white bench seats, black and white checkered floors, cute coat rack, rustic chandelier and pretty pooch to top it off. {Although Mr M's border collie Lily is equally as pretty}.

{ Anna Spiro in Vogue Living }

The Aussie blogging success Anna Spiro is featured in this month's Vogue Living.

Over at Absolutley Beautiful Things Anna posted about how she dreamt of being featured in such a magazine as a little girl. I think it's such a great achievement - to have that dream realised, how satisfying, I would be giddy with excitement.

And who doesn't love Anna's house? It is amazing. {I have featured her bathroom before} Next time I am in Brisbane visiting my sister I must go to the Black and Spiro store in New Farm to drool over cushions and fabric and lamps.

Congratulations Anna - I will be keeping a keen eye out on Black and Spiro's new website for the Signature Collection which is 'coming soon'...

{ Cow Art }

I would very much like to get some 'cow art'. I know. What the hell am I thinking? But if I find the right piece it will work very well with my modern rustic farmhouse. {Is that what I'm calling it?!}

This fireplace setting works well with the pale brickwork, woven basket, blonde wood chair and natural carpet. That mantle is a beautiful piece of wood, as is our magnificent mantle in the cottage {that I am yet to post photos of, I know, I know, bad blogger}.

Meanwhile, some livestock images I am quite fond of...

It is proving hard to find something I like which features the black Angus cattle which we run here at Ythanbrae though - a lot of photographers/artists tend to focus on the Friesian or Hereford cows. A lot of the photos or paintings I'm drawn to though are more landscapes rather than portraits? Perhaps I am playing it safe? I do love Sharon Montrose's work though. Now there's a portrait of a sheep, a goat, a goose, a deer...

Okay, so I confess. I may already have some 'cow art'. This piece below {illustration?} came with the cottage, it was hanging on a wall in the empty house when we moved in, so I feel that the cottage sort of 'owns' it, which is nice. I love the frame, but the illustration is just a page out of a magazine I think and is all crinkled. It's not much of a statement piece which is what I would like above the fireplace, but am worried that I am getting too obsessed with images of cows, goats, chooks and geese and my house will look like a crazy menagerie!

{ Books Books Books }

One day I am going to have the biggest collection of books. One day. At the moment my library is quite modest - but I still take great pride in displaying them, stacking them, flicking through them, arranging them.
How do you display your books?

{ Pet Inspiration }

I am going to make Tessa a new bed. Yes I am. I promise. No more procrastinating! She has a little pillow/mat that she sits on, in a little nook in between my desk and the fireplace, but she sleeps outside at night. I feel a puppy makeover coming on, it is time for a pouch overhaul! Now if only I could find that perfect fabric for such a project...

In the meantime these pet/home design images are spurring me on:

If you know where this comes from please let me know so I can link back.

{ Pale and Interesting }

My new favourite - Pale and Interesting...

I'll take some of those vintage inspired floral cushions, that armoire and that distressed leather armchair if you don't mind!

Oh and a glass cloche, silver candlesticks and a stack of books...

{ Mended Heart }

Oh how my heart breaks for Anthropologie...why won't they ship to Australia???!

A few of my favourites from the holy grail...

I shot off an email to the lovelies at Anthropologie begging them to offer shipping to Australia. Great news : they are intending to add us Aussies as a shipping location in {northern hemisphere} late summer/early autumn. Hurray!

{ Paint! Glorious Paint! }

As I've mentioned before, the cottage is getting a new lease on life - a lick of paint! At the moment it is a very faded blue colour, originally it was probably a deep, navy blue but I don't think it's been painted in about 20 years!

Ideally I want the cottage painted something like Dulux's Whisper White, but because the blue is so dark the amount of paint that would be required { $ } would be immense to cover it! So, at the moment my heart is set on Hog Bristle {also from Dulux}.

The above photo is of a room painted in Antique White USA {Dulux again} - which is the colour I would like for the entire interior. At the moment the living area/kitchen is painted a cream colour with too much yellow in it, with the ceilings in the same colour. In the bedrooms the walls are the same cream colour, but the ceilings are white. The bathroom is a powder blue colour, the laundry is a colour similar to Hog Bristle and Matt's office is an orange/yellow colour! I can't wait to have the whole house a blank white canvas!
