{ Happy Friday }

Have a great weekend, hope it is spent with girlfriends and cocktails like mine will be! I've got a friend from school's hens party in Melbourne - should be good fun with good friends from way back.

{ Tuesday's Object of Desire }

This weeks Tuesday's Object of Desire...because I think it's pretty, and kitsch and reminds me of housewives I love like Samantha from Bewitched. I remember when I was a little girl I wanted a marriage just like Sam and Darrens!

My recent mantle re-shape was inspired by the gorgeous design elements in The Old Painted Cottage - have you seen it? I love it. Mr M hates it. Ho hum. Admittedly I don't like all of it - but that's just the point of decorating one's home isn't it? It's your own.

Well if you notice by the door of The Old Painted Cottage there is a little frame, on a little table, with some little vintage flashcards? They are from etsy seller CariKraft. And now you can buy them all ready to go! Cool, huh? They also have a heap of other flashcards in case you have anything else you want to say. {Don't we all?}

I would very much like this to go by our back door...which is actually our front door...confusing but the front of the cottage is the deck, which has double French doors that open out onto it from living area and master bedroom, so the back of the cottage is the entry.

{ A Pony Tale }

Have you all seen MayaLee photography ? If you haven't, first of all what rock have you been living under?! Secondly, get over there now and check it out! Well, Lotta's post last week of gorgeous horses in the morning Autumn sun got me totally inspired.

I can't say this is all purely personal inspiration - I am doing some promotional photography work with a local vet clinic at the moment - but still, I had so much fun playing around with Archie trying to get him to behave. Now, what is it they say about children and animals?

I didn't groom him.
I didn't take his old tattered halter off.
I couldn't narrow it down to less than this.
Sorry.
Hope you like them anyway.

{ 100th post - GIVEAWAY! }

I have reached the big 1-0-0.
Little Miss Emma is growing up.

To celebrate I thought what better way than to GIVE BACK to my loyal {and new} readers. I love reading all my comments, taking advice or different viewpoints and commenting back over on all of your amazingly inspirational blogs {you clever things}.

So the fabulous photographer Susannah Tucker has come up with the goods! This way-too-cute 8 x 8 inch print entitled 'Up...Up...and Away'. In Susannah's own words this image 'is so summery and makes me feel eager for all things to come over the warmer months'. I couldn't agree more - I am so looking forward to summer and all the happiness it seems to bring.

Susannah's polaroids make me swoon - so simple, delicate, always fun and best of all a Melbourne artist! When I see an update from her blog I have to rush over and see what she has been pointing her camera at recently. I have featured her work before, and she has been fortunate enough to be featured on some massive blogs like Decor8, sfgirlbybay and Apartment Therapy {the lucky duck}.

To be in the chance to win a gorgeous piece of art to grace the walls of your home all you have to do is:

1. Become a Little Miss Emma follower, if you aren't already {and if you are, thanks!}
2. Leave a comment here on this post - don't be shy, I don't bite ;)
3. Sit back, relax and wait for me to pick a winner randomly!

Good luck! xxx

{ My Mantlepiece }

I thought it about time I finally posted some photos of our fabulous mantle that we have in the cottage. It is a beautiful big slab of timber, with notches and markings on it from years of wear. A lot of people swoon over mantlepieces and how they could decorate them, but I have found ours quite tricky. For one it is very long - 263cm to be exact. On one end it has to house our UHF radio and Mr M's other communication devices {he is in the CFA }. This used to irritate me to no end but after the February fires I have definitely realised that communication is so vital in emergencies, when Mr M has been out fighting fires I have been able to listen to him on the UHF, not to mention when the mobile towers burnt out and we had no power so no phone. {I don't have mobile reception at Ythanbrae anyway}.

So, the UHF and what-not stays mounted to one end of the mantle {I have cut out of photos - too ugly}. We had the iconic Craig's Hut image which I gave to Mr M for his 18th birthday. It does seem like an 'above-the-mantle' piece but I hate the frame. So it will find a new home. I also went through a big stage of 'more-is-more' - I think something I read in a Rachel Ashwell book, was going for a bit of cluttered-shabby chic with all my different photo frames. But I felt they were detracting from the beautiful piece of timber so they have to find new homes also.

The Ikea Hemnes mirror I have had standing vertically in our bedroom, but if you remember my to-do list I had wanted to mount it above the fireplace. Well it is bloody heavy! So leaning will do, and actually there isn't much room between the picture rail and the top of the mirror, so not too fussed. Ooooh did you see the picture rail??? That never used to be there. There was however a massive crack along the wall, the painters suggested we put a picture rail there instead of trying to patch it and it looks great.

The walls and fireplace used to be a yellow-cream but I chose Antique White USA from Dulux. I am trying to create a more French provincial rather than shabby chic home these days - I am aiming for white with hits of brown. Natural. Funny how your tastes evolve don't they? When I was at uni I collected my floral photo frames - but now that I live with Mr M I find I don't want anything too feminine.

Has your decorating taste evolved as your life has?

The new mantlepiece arrangement I would say is not finished yet - I would like a vase with some fresh flowers rather than the candelabra. The clock my sister gave to me, my sister who has very modern tastes and thought the clock was horrendous but knew I would love it so bought it anyway. I love it because of that. So now the mantle is white mainly, with the accents of the brown timber and my brown shadowbox {I got that with my mum when I was 15 from The Warehouse for $30! So many people ask me what antique shop I got it from!} Plus some silver for good measure with my Venetian frames. We're big on family photos but I'm thinking I'd like to do them all in black and white to make it look more cohesive? I like to decorate for Christmas with white and silver too so I'm working up to it!

{ Cottage Garden Edging }

Remember when I promised photos of my new garden edging? Well here they are. It matches the new colour of the cottage, not to mention keeping with the character of the house. As for it's practicalities, well Tessa seems to totally ignore it and jump right over, still digging up my poor sage and basil plants. Sigh.

{ Images by me, Mr M would like you to excuse the uncut lawn - the mower is broken }

{ Happy Friday }

Have a lovely weekend!

What have I got planned this weekend, you ask?
Absolutely nothing!

How glorious, you say. Well I'm sure we will fill it with lots of busy bee Spring things. Dependant on my mood I might continue Spring cleaning the cottage, or begin to plant our veggie patch down the hill next to the chook run. I might even dig up my to-do list and see what needs ticking off. A lot I think.

Mr Archibald needs to be ridden, or at least exercised, Miss Tessa needs a bath, and we might be having guests for lunch tomorrow afternoon with their adorable four year old twins. Mr M recently killed some of our lambs so a barbeque is in order, fully Greek style I'm envisaging. If you haven't had farm fresh Spring lamb you MUST! My herb garden is overflowing with mint so the more lamb I get to season and marinade the better.

What are you up to this weekend? I'd love to hear.

{ Organised Mags }

Today is my much coveted 'Wednesday-off-dreaded-day-job' with which I am supposed to work on my photography business. Most Wednesday's I do get a lot of work done for Emma Durkin Photographics - but some days I just try and catch up on all the things that working an 8 til 6 job limits, like cleaning the {feral} house, riding the much neglected Archie, gardening, sewing some minky blankets or constructing canvases for my etsy shop , and *gasp* blogging about it all.

This morning I was struggling to get into doing quotes, invoices, looking at doing some more advertising/promotional work, updating my website...so I obsessively organised all of my magazines. Naturally. I currently subscribe to Real Living, Australian Country Style and Notebook...although I haven't got this month's Notebook so I think my subscription has expired. Boo.

The ever lovely Mr M went to a garage sale recently without me {how rude, I know} and came home with a big stack of Vogue Entertaining + Travel and Australian Country Style editions which I didn't have. He is constantly telling me off for the money I spend on magazines, so he thought if he bought about forty home which cost him about $20 for the lot I would be satisfied for months. Ha! It has only made me hungrier to devour their delicious glossy pages...

{ Tuesday's Object of Desire }

...because three USB points on my mac is just not enough!

How cute is this little 'flower pot' of bright red tulips? Usually attached to my computer I have my camera, my internet and lately a keyboard or mouse due to my {frustrating} wireless ones not wanting to work anymore. I generally carry my portable hard drive around with me from my home office where I moonlight as a photographer/etsy seller to my dreaded day job, so I always have to unplug things and replug them and get in behind my big mac screen to do it all. Annoying! These little tulips from Fred Flare would certainly brighten my desk too.

Pretty and functional. Love.

{ The Great Couch Debate }

The time has finally come...to say goodbye to my uni-student couch from Fantastic Furniture. It's a happy day, let me tell you. I am so over vaccuuming it's crappy, sticky, clingy fabric, and I am never again buying a couch with throw cushions as it's only backing!

So, off Mr M and I tootle down to the big smoke of Melbourne-town {which is quite the occassion let me tell you, he usually gets a rash coming into contact with suburbia}. We were pretty much sold on getting a brown leather couch, for cleaning purposes mainly. So this is what I had in mind...

But then...the only leather couches that we could have Tessa on and not scratch are way out of our budget. So our thoughts turned to fabric couches. As much as Mr M says Tess won't be allowed on the new couch, we both know that eventually she will end up there.

I really love antique style couches with big puffy cushions, small feet and low arms. The cottage being so small we were all about trying to make the space seem larger, so we thought a couch which you could see under would create an illusion of space {or so some interior design magazine told me...} So I then had something like this envisaged...

Mr M was...how shall I say this...very specific about the shape of the couch. We hate lowline couches, too low to the ground and low backs are not our style. Mr M is also 6' 6'' so he feels top heavy in a couch that is too low at the back, not deep enough or has low arms {"I feel like I'm going to fall off!!!"} But anything too deep and I feel like Goldilocks in Papa Bear's chair with my feet swinging off the ground! We wanted something comfortable, something you can see under if possible, somethnig with a hard wearing fabric and with rolled arms - square arms we felt were too modern for our classic tastes.

After traipsing through what seemed like every furniture store in coo-ee of Melbourne, we finally came back and settled on the Ashbury from Freedom. It has rolled arms, a high enough back, not too low to the ground, is a classic shape so it shouldn't date too much, fits into Mr M's standards of comfort and my standards of classic French/Cape Cod/Australian country style. Plus it could be upholstered in any of the fabrics we chose at Freedom - after much debate we decided on a hard-wearing, industrial type fabric called 'Essence Bark'. I had my hopes pinned on 'Benz Sandstone' but after we compared the two side by side there was not a lot of difference {i.e. not worth the domestic argument about to explode in a public place}.

Now what combinations to get? We debated have two armchairs and a three seater, two 2.5 seaters, whether we had enough room, whether we should really be buying for the space considering we will most likely have the couches longer than we will live in the cottage. We finally settled on a three seater and a two seater. Great. Now they won't be ready until late November as they are getting custom built.

Now that wasn't hard was it? How exhausting.

{ Image from the Freedom Spring catalogue - we are getting the Ashbury without the skirt at the bottom so you can see under the couch better }

{ Home }

Hope your weekend is going to be splendid. Mr M and I are off HOME to Gippsland. I haven't been home to Thorpdale in the longest time and am extremely homesick. Pity my Mum won't be there but she's off jetting about in Vietnam and visiting my sister in Cambodia where she now lives.

The above photo is the classic Thorpdale image, taken by me when I was at uni. I used to get terribly homesick living in Melbourne and would run away home to take images like this, they always seem to be better the more homesick I was. So, with this in mind I am going home armed with my camera, hopefully I will get some great shots of where I grew up - rolling hills, red volcanic soils of the potato paddocks and plentiful water sources. Aaaahh....can't wait to go home. As much as Ythanbrae has become mine and Mr M's home, Thorpdale will always will be home to me.

{ Desk Lampin' It Up }

I have been drawn lately to the 'architect lamps' - brass ones, nikel ones, old school industrial ones, shiny new modern ones. On the one hand I like the idea of having a big ol' table lamp with a big shade covered in my favourite fabric sitting on my desk, but then I think these extendable-armed-beauties are a bit more space efficient? They seem to have so much character to me, I think solely due to the Pixar logo that bounces around before my favourite animated film! My favourite is the Pottery Barn Teen one...
